Jhandu Kumar Secures India's First Medal at CWG 2026, Karthik Budigina Fourth

In a remarkable display of resilience, Jhandu Kumar has made history by winning India's first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, securing a bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event. Overcoming significant challenges throughout his life, including polio and financial hardships, the 28-year-old athlete achieved a commendable score of 130.9 points, successfully lifting weights of 181kg and 190kg. His achievement not only marks a personal victory but also serves as an inspiration to many who face similar adversities. Kumar's fellow competitor, Sudhir, finished in sixth place with a score of 114.1 points, showcasing the competitive spirit of Indian athletes in this prestigious event.

In addition to Kumar's triumph, the para swimming events saw Indian swimmer Karthik Budigina narrowly missing out on a medal. Budigina finished fourth in the men's 100m Freestyle S13 final, clocking a time of 57.57 seconds, just shy of the podium. His performance, while commendable, highlighted the fierce competition at the Games, as Imam Ali, the other Indian swimmer in the event, concluded his race in seventh place with a time of 1:03.73. Meanwhile, in the able-bodied category, Srihari Nataraj faced a setback, failing to qualify for the men’s 50m backstroke final after finishing seventh in the semifinals, demonstrating the unpredictable nature of competitive sports.
