A remarkable radar image resembling a hummingbird has been unveiled by scientists from the U.S.-India Earth-observing NISAR satellite, showcasing a unique view of Antarctica's icy terrain. This captivating image, produced using the satellite's advanced L-band radar technology, features Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja, a mountain peak that rises prominently through the expansive ice sheet of East Antarctica. The image, which was generated in August 2025 and subsequently released by NASA, has been affectionately dubbed 'the hummingbird' by the NISAR team due to its striking resemblance to the bird. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this radar image provides crucial insights into the dynamics of glaciers and the significant structural transformations occurring beneath Antarctica's ice cover.
Located in East Antarctica, Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja is surrounded by a massive glacier that flows northeastward toward the ocean. As this glacier maneuvers around the exposed mountain, it generates immense stress within the ice, leading to the formation of extensive cracks known as crevasses. These deep fissures are vividly represented as bright green streaks in the radar image, highlighting the areas where the ice surface has been severely compromised due to the mountain's obstruction. The advanced radar imagery allows scientists to investigate these concealed ice structures with exceptional accuracy, even in regions that are typically challenging to access on foot.
