Birbhum District Courts Deliver Justice with Major Convictions in One Day

In a remarkable achievement for the judicial system in Birbhum district, West Bengal, local courts made significant strides on Thursday by convicting four individuals across three distinct criminal cases. This decisive action saw three of the defendants sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in two murder cases and a dowry-related death, while another individual received a 10-year rigorous sentence for a child sexual assault case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The Birbhum District Police reported that these convictions stemmed from cases dating back to 2010, 2022, and 2023, showcasing the relentless efforts of law enforcement and the prosecution that led to these successful outcomes. The earliest case involved a murder that occurred on March 20, 2010, at Illambazar Police Station. Authorities indicated that two men, Ajoy Roy and Nokul Chandra Mondal, unlawfully entered a residence during a dispute and fatally attacked a man. The investigation, spearheaded by Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam, culminated in a charge sheet being filed against the accused after thorough inquiries were completed. Following a trial overseen by the Additional Sessions Judge at the 2nd Court in Suri, both defendants were found guilty on July 23 and sentenced to life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. In a separate case, the court also convicted Sk Gul Mohammad for the dowry-related death of his wife, Asma Bibi. This case, which was registered on June 17, 2022, involved allegations that the victim suffered extensive physical and mental abuse due to dowry demands before her tragic murder. The investigation, directed by Sub-Inspector Bhaskar Roy, was completed in a swift 53 days, leading to a charge sheet that included evidence of the accused's confession. The case was closely monitored by the district's Trial Monitoring Cell and prosecuted by the Assistant Public Prosecutor, resulting in a life sentence for Sk Gul Mohammad, along with a fine of Rs 50,000. The third conviction came from the Special POCSO Court in Suri, which found 22-year-old Soumen Bagdi guilty of sexually assaulting his 15-year-old neighbor. The incident, which took place on August 19, 2023, involved the accused allegedly entering the victim's home and committing the crime. Sub-Inspector Avishek Ghosh conducted the investigation, filing the charge sheet within 55 days under Section 376(3) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the POCSO Act. The Special POCSO Court delivered its verdict on July 23, sentencing Bagdi to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 10,000, and an additional six months' imprisonment for failure to pay the fine. The Birbhum District Police hailed these three convictions as a testament to the collaborative efforts of investigators, prosecutors, and the trial monitoring system, which worked diligently to ensure prompt investigations and effective prosecution of serious crimes. The police emphasized that these verdicts highlight the district's unwavering commitment to achieving justice for victims of violent crimes, dowry-related offenses, and sexual violence against children.
