UN Calls for Urgent Action as 6,000 Seafarers Stranded in Hormuz Crisis

The United Nations has issued a grave warning regarding a humanitarian emergency unfolding in the Strait of Hormuz, where a significant number of seafarers are trapped amidst escalating conflict. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has emphasized the urgent need for intervention, highlighting the critical risks these crews face concerning their safety, health, and fundamental rights. The situation is dire, with many of these individuals lacking access to essential resources such as food, water, and medical care, as well as being cut off from communication with their families.

Recent reports from the International Maritime Organization indicate that approximately 6,000 seafarers are currently stranded on around 400 vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Many of these individuals were unable to evacuate during a temporary ceasefire, and the actual number of those affected could be even higher, as some remain unaccounted for across the broader Persian Gulf region. Alarmingly, the UN has noted that several shipowners have completely abandoned their crews, leaving at least nine ships with 93 crew members marooned at Iranian ports since the onset of the conflict. The conditions aboard these vessels have become increasingly precarious, with crew members facing severe shortages of food, water, fuel, and medical assistance, all while being isolated in a volatile area.
