US Calls Malaysian Ambassador Over Israel Policy Dispute

The United States has summoned Malaysia's ambassador to address concerns regarding the Southeast Asian nation's longstanding stance on Israel. This diplomatic move, reported by Malaysia's state news agency Bernama, highlights the growing tensions between the two nations over Malaysia's refusal to recognize Israel as a state. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan confirmed that Ambassador Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob conveyed Malaysia's position during discussions with officials at the US State Department, emphasizing that the country's policy regarding Israel is not a recent development. Hasan reiterated that Malaysia's immigration protocols do not acknowledge the existence of Israel or its government, which has been a consistent part of the nation's foreign policy framework. He pointed out a recent incident involving a dual citizen of the US and Israel who entered Malaysia on a US passport. Upon verification, it was discovered that the individual also held Israeli citizenship, leading to their expulsion from the country.

Malaysia has no formal diplomatic relations with Israel and has consistently voiced its support for the Palestinian cause, condemning Israeli actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The recent tensions were exacerbated by the controversy surrounding the Network School, a community for digital nomads established by US investor Balaji Srinivasan. The school faced backlash on social media after allegations surfaced claiming that it included participants from Israel. Following an investigation, Malaysian authorities confirmed that all attendees possessed valid travel documents, yet the school was still shut down, reflecting the sensitive nature of Israel-related issues in the country. In response to the Malaysian government's actions, a group of eight US congressmen expressed their discontent in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, particularly regarding Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's intentions to monitor and deport any Israeli citizens found within Malaysia.
