Mumbai Police Address Controversy Over Viral Protest Video Involving Woman

On Friday, the Mumbai Police issued a statement regarding a viral video that seemed to depict a plainclothes officer physically engaging with a female protester during a demonstration at Shivaji Park, located in the Dadar area of Mumbai. The footage, which has circulated widely on social media platforms, shows a police officer in civilian attire rushing towards a group of demonstrators in an attempt to detain a male protester. In the midst of this confrontation, a woman protester intervenes, leading to what appears to be contact between the officer's hand and her person. This incident has ignited a political debate, particularly after Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad shared the video on X, expressing her disapproval of the police's actions. She questioned why a male officer was involved in handling a female protester and why female officers were not taking charge of the situation. Gaikwad's post called for accountability, stating, "What is this behaviour Mumbai Police? Why is a male cop manhandling a young female protestor like this? Why isn't he letting his female colleagues handle this? What action will be taken against him? This is unacceptable @Dev_Fadnavis." Her remarks reflect a growing concern over police conduct during protests, especially in cases involving women.

In response to the uproar, the Mumbai Police clarified that the video has been misinterpreted and that the officer did not intentionally manhandle the woman. They described the interpretation of the incident as "extremely irresponsible and incorrect." The police explained that the officer was focused on restraining a male protester and did not see the woman stepping in front of him at that moment. They urged individuals to verify facts before jumping to conclusions based solely on video evidence. The police emphasized that senior officers had reviewed the situation thoroughly and confirmed the context of the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan also supported the officer's actions, stating that the officer was merely trying to manage the situation with the male protester when the woman unexpectedly came into the line of action. This defense aims to clarify the intentions behind the officer's actions and to mitigate the backlash against the police force.
