Opposition Stands Firm as Lok Sabha Adjourns Amid NEET Controversy

In New Delhi, the ongoing confrontation between the Central government and the Opposition regarding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has shown no signs of resolution. On Friday, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until Monday without any discussion on the pressing issue of the NEET paper leak. The Opposition has been vocal in its demand for Pradhan's resignation, while the government has accused them of obstructing necessary discussions by imposing preconditions. This impasse has led to the House experiencing its fifth consecutive day of disruptions, highlighting the deepening divide between the two sides. When the Lok Sabha reconvened at noon after an earlier suspension, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged the Opposition to permit a debate on the NEET paper leak. He specifically called upon Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to persuade his party members to engage in the discussion. Rijiju emphasized that creating excuses and setting preconditions could convey a negative message to the public. He reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed to implementing a stringent anti-paper leak law and expediting trials for those implicated in such cases. Furthermore, Rijiju mentioned that the Union Cabinet was expected to make a decision regarding the proposed legislation on that very day, and he noted the conclusion of activist Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike.

Despite these appeals, the Congress party and other Opposition factions remained resolute in their call for Pradhan's resignation, chanting slogans of "Istifa Do" within the House. Rahul Gandhi attempted to address the assembly during the proceedings; however, the Chair, led by Jagdambika Pal, indicated that he would have the opportunity to speak once the ministers had presented their official documents. Before this could occur, the House was once again adjourned until Monday. The ongoing disruptions have resulted in Parliament failing to address the scheduled discussions on the NEET paper leak issue, further complicating the legislative agenda. Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla honored the soldiers in remembrance of the upcoming 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, which is to be observed on Sunday. Following this tribute, Opposition members began to vocally demand Pradhan's resignation. Birla reminded the members that he had previously assured them of a debate on the paper leak issue in accordance with House rules and urged them to refrain from disrupting the Question Hour, which is a vital mechanism for holding the government accountable. Unfortunately, the Question Hour has faced disruptions throughout all five days of the current Monsoon Session, which is slated to conclude on August 13.
