UPI Expansion: Spain Joins the List of Countries for Instant Payments

For those who have longed for the convenience of making payments abroad just as easily as they do at their favorite local tea shop, there is promising news on the horizon. India and Spain have initiated discussions to expedite the integration of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Bizum, Spain's own instant payment system. This significant development was announced during the recent visit of India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, to Spain. The talks not only focused on the payment integration but also emphasized enhancing investment facilitation, improving professional mobility, and fostering joint investments in Latin America. The potential collaboration between these two nations could revolutionize how payments are processed internationally, making transactions smoother for travelers and businesses alike.

However, several questions remain regarding the scope of this partnership. Currently, it is unclear whether the collaboration will encompass only person-to-person payments and retail transactions or if it will also include merchant settlements and larger foreign-exchange conversions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) International, which oversees UPI, and the consortium managing Bizum are actively working to clarify these details. In addition to Spain, similar initiatives are underway with Qatar, where QR-based UPI acceptance is being introduced at retail locations, and with the Maldives, which has established a network agreement to facilitate UPI transactions on the islands. Furthermore, a postal-remittance partnership between India Post and NPCI International aims to enhance financial connectivity between India and the Maldives.
