Parliamentary Stalemate Over NEET Paper Leak: Rahul Gandhi Outlines Conditions

During the ongoing Monsoon Session, the Lok Sabha faced significant disruptions, leading to its adjournment until 11:00 AM on July 27, Friday. The interruptions were primarily instigated by members of the Opposition who were vocally demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in light of the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The atmosphere in Parliament was charged as protesting MPs continued to call for accountability, which further escalated the political deadlock. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju made an appeal for the Opposition to allow a debate to take place in the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the importance of addressing the issue at hand. He pointed out that the government has made numerous attempts to engage with opposition parties, including the Congress, to facilitate a discussion on the NEET matter. Rijiju expressed concern that failing to hold this debate could convey a misleading message to the public. He reminded the House that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously assured the nation of forthcoming legislation to tackle paper leaks and the establishment of fast-track courts to expedite such cases. The minister urged the opposition to refrain from imposing preconditions on the discussions, stating, "I have requested KC Venugopal ji once again today, when we are all of the opinion that there should be a discussion on NEET. The PM has assured the nation. Sonam Wangchuk has broken his hunger strike and demanded a discussion. If we do not hold a discussion, it will not send the right message to the country."

Despite Rijiju's appeals, the opposition remained steadfast in their demands for Pradhan's resignation, chanting slogans such as "Istifa Do" (Resign Now), which ultimately led to the adjournment of the proceedings for the day. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, articulated that no discussions would proceed until three specific conditions were met: the resignation of Pradhan, accountability for those who allegedly assaulted students, and an apology from the Prime Minister directed at the affected students. Gandhi remarked, "These are the three conditions. We are not going to have any conversation, any discussion before Mr. Pradhan is sacked." He also criticized the handling of the situation in the Lok Sabha, stating that when he attempted to respond to Rijiju's remarks, he was not permitted to speak, and his microphone was turned off.
