Punjab Allocates Rs 20.22 Crore for Cashless Cancer Treatment for 8,069 Patients

The diagnosis of cancer can be an overwhelming experience for patients and their families, often leading to a dual concern: not only is there the fear of the disease itself, but also the anxiety surrounding the financial implications of treatment. In response to this pressing issue, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has implemented the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden associated with cancer treatment, ensuring that patients can focus on their recovery rather than their expenses. Recent data from the State Health Agency (SHA) indicates that as of July 18, 2026, a total of 8,069 cancer patients have benefited from cashless treatment through this scheme, with the government investing Rs 20.22 crore in their medical care. The age distribution of the beneficiaries reveals a significant aspect of the cancer treatment landscape in Punjab. While cancer is often perceived as a disease that primarily affects the elderly, the statistics show a substantial number of patients within their working years. Specifically, 4,285 individuals aged between 36 and 60 years make up the largest demographic receiving treatment under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. Additionally, 3,376 patients are over 60 years old, while 399 beneficiaries fall into the 17 to 35 age group, and nine patients are below 17. For many families, a cancer diagnosis can lead to a financial crisis, as treatment often necessitates frequent hospital visits, costly procedures, and long-term care. The financial implications can significantly impact the speed at which a patient can begin their treatment journey. For instance, Darshan Devi from Samana faced a similar predicament; after being advised to undergo surgery, the estimated cost of Rs 4-5 lakh was a significant concern for her family. However, once she was approved for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, her surgery was conducted without any out-of-pocket expenses, highlighting how the scheme can eliminate financial barriers to necessary medical care.
