Assam Flood Crisis Deepens: 61 Lives Lost, Over 7 Lakh Affected

The flood situation in Assam has escalated alarmingly, with the death toll now reaching 61, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). In just the past 24 hours, 14 additional fatalities have been confirmed, highlighting the severity of the ongoing crisis. The deluge has impacted more than 705,000 individuals across 12 districts, with Charaideo emerging as the area with the highest number of recent casualties. Rescue and relief efforts are actively underway, although large portions of the state remain submerged, and one individual is still unaccounted for in Sivasagar. The overall conditions in Assam are dire, affecting districts including Golaghat, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Biswanath, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Kamrup (M), and Karbi Anglong.

Sivasagar is currently facing the brunt of the disaster, with approximately 348,555 residents affected, followed closely by Charaideo, where 188,404 people are grappling with the aftermath of the floods, and Jorhat, which has reported 126,793 individuals impacted. The ASDMA's latest report indicates that a total of 856 villages and 37 revenue circles have been severely affected by the rising waters. The agricultural sector has taken a significant hit, with over 56,606 hectares of farmland submerged, threatening the livelihoods of countless farmers. As the water levels show no signs of receding, more than 315,000 individuals have sought shelter in 363 relief camps and distribution centers established by local authorities in the flood-stricken areas.
