Supreme Court Raises Alarm Over Declining Joint Family System in India

The Supreme Court of India has recently voiced its apprehensions regarding the diminishing prevalence of joint families in the country, highlighting the potential social repercussions of this trend. During a hearing related to the notorious Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, where Sonam Raghuvanshi is accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder during their honeymoon, the court took the opportunity to reflect on the broader implications of changing family dynamics. The justices expressed their dismay over the erosion of traditional family structures and the increasing reliance on technology for parenting, suggesting that these factors could lead to significant societal challenges in the future.

Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale, who presided over the case, articulated their concerns about the ongoing transformation of familial relationships in contemporary society. They noted that the joint family system has historically provided children with a nurturing environment, surrounded by extended family members such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. This close-knit structure has been instrumental in fostering strong family ties and a sense of shared responsibility among its members. Justice Sundresh shared a personal observation from a recent dining experience, where he witnessed a family using a smartphone to distract their child during a meal, emphasizing the detrimental impact of such practices on familial bonds. He warned that if technology continues to replace parental interaction, it could lead to a future devoid of genuine human connections, stating, "We are becoming like machines."
