Saina Nehwal Expresses Disappointment Over Badminton's Omission from Commonwealth Games

Saina Nehwal, the renowned Indian badminton player, has voiced her dismay regarding the recent decision to exclude badminton, hockey, and shooting from the lineup of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This announcement has been met with significant concern, particularly for young athletes who now face the loss of a crucial opportunity to showcase their talents on a prominent international platform. Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat India Summit (South Edition), Saina articulated her bewilderment over the removal of sports in which India has historically excelled, emphasizing the importance of these events for the nation's sporting legacy. She stated, “We have won so many gold medals in the Commonwealth Games in badminton, hockey, and shooting. These sports are not there this time, and it is very surprising. I wonder how the players are feeling because we have played in every Commonwealth Games from 2006 to 2022.”

The former World No. 1 acknowledged that India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and expressed hope that the omitted sports will make a return. However, she admitted that the current exclusion is a bitter pill to swallow. “It is very surprising because in 2030 we again have the Commonwealth Games in India and I am sure these events will be there. But I don’t know how they can just remove these big sports. It is very disappointing,” she remarked. Saina encouraged athletes to maintain their motivation despite this setback, recognizing the emotional toll it may take on younger players who were looking forward to competing in these prestigious events. She highlighted the case of Unnati, a promising player who would have benefited from this experience, underscoring the importance of such tournaments for emerging talents.
