Orcas Unveil Unique Hunting Technique by Exploding Sunfish

In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have documented an unprecedented hunting technique employed by orcas, showcasing their remarkable adaptability and intelligence. Underwater footage has revealed these marine mammals engaging in a high-speed ramming strategy against giant sunfish, resulting in the fish bursting into fragments. This astonishing behavior was recorded during two separate incidents in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico and the Gulf of California, with findings recently published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology.

The first incident occurred on July 29, 2024, when Kathryn Ayres, a research scientist affiliated with the marine conservation group Beneath the Waves, captured the event while serving as a diving guide near San Jose del Cabo. Ayres, who had previously observed orcas collaborating to hunt whale sharks, expressed her astonishment at witnessing the sheer force with which the orcas attacked the sunfish. The underwater footage revealed a coordinated effort between two orcas, with one holding the sunfish by its tail while the other sped towards it. Just before the collision, the first orca released its grip, allowing the second to collide with the sunfish at an incredible velocity, resulting in a spectacular explosion of fish fragments.
