The National Stock Exchange (NSE) is poised to revolutionize India's commodity derivatives market with the introduction of the country's inaugural exchange-traded energy derivative linked to a domestic benchmark. Set to commence trading on July 27, this innovative product, known as Indian Natural Gas Futures, aims to enhance price discovery and provide a specialized risk management tool tailored for the natural gas sector in India. This launch is anticipated to fortify the emerging gas trading landscape in the country by establishing a benchmark that accurately reflects domestic market dynamics, rather than being influenced by international pricing trends. The NSE characterized this development as a pivotal moment for India's commodity markets, sharing the news on the social media platform X. In their announcement, they stated, "India's first exchange to introduce Energy Derivatives referenced to a domestic benchmark. A new milestone in India's commodity derivatives market."
Prior to this launch, the NSE had communicated with market participants through an official circular, confirming that it had secured regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to introduce these contracts within its commodity derivatives segment. According to the established timeline, trading is set to begin on July 27, with monthly contracts being introduced in accordance with the exchange's launch calendar. The futures contracts will be traded under the symbol NATGASIND and will be settled entirely in cash. Pricing for these contracts will be determined based on the benchmark from the Indian Gas Exchange's (IGX) Gujarat (Dahej) hub, which is expressed in rupees per mmBtu. Notably, this benchmark excludes transportation costs, taxes, and other applicable charges, ensuring that it accurately reflects the underlying price of gas.
