Saina Nehwal Discusses India's Challenges in Producing Sporting Champions

Saina Nehwal, a trailblazer in Indian badminton, has made significant contributions to the sport, becoming the first Indian woman to secure an Olympic medal in badminton and achieving the pinnacle of world rankings. Her journey has not only inspired countless aspiring athletes but has also positioned India as a formidable force in the global badminton arena. Despite these accomplishments, Nehwal remains acutely aware of the challenges that persist in nurturing sporting talent in India, particularly in disciplines outside of cricket. Speaking at the Rising Bharat India Summit, she shared her insights on the systemic issues that hinder the development of world-class athletes in the country.

Nehwal emphasized that the primary obstacles lie in the lack of structured support, visibility, and financial investment in sports other than cricket. She pointed out that cricket's immense popularity can be attributed to a robust infrastructure and well-organized leagues that are consistently broadcasted on television. In contrast, other sports struggle to gain similar traction and visibility. "There may be other tournaments across different sports going on, but only hardcore fans will watch them. That’s why I think the sports associations and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) should market the sports much better and increase the publicity so they can rise to the levels of cricket," she remarked. This disparity in exposure, according to Nehwal, is a significant factor that limits the growth of other sports in India.
