Indian-Origin Woman Found Dead in Canada, Partner Arrested for Murder

A tragic incident has unfolded in Edmonton, Canada, where a 23-year-old woman of Indian descent, Damanpreet Kaur, was reportedly strangled to death by her live-in partner. The suspect, identified as Ritish Kumar, a 22-year-old originally from Delhi, has been taken into custody and faces charges of second-degree murder. This case has been classified by local authorities as an intimate partner homicide, highlighting the serious issue of domestic violence. Damanpreet, who hailed from Samrala in the Ludhiana district of Punjab, had moved to Canada approximately five years ago, pursuing educational opportunities that her family had financed through a loan. The circumstances surrounding her death have left her community in shock, as friends and family grapple with the loss of a young life cut short under such tragic circumstances.

On July 9, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) responded to a distress call regarding an unresponsive woman at a residence in the Silverberry neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered Damanpreet with suspicious injuries, prompting immediate medical intervention. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries three days later on July 12. An autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that the cause of death was homicide due to strangulation. The police have stated that no other suspects are being pursued in connection with this case, and the allegations against Kumar remain unproven until they are presented in court.
