The strait measures just 29 kilometers at its narrowest point, making it particularly susceptible to attacks from hostile forces. The Houthi movement has recently intensified its military actions, deploying missiles and drones against shipping vessels, which raises alarms about the security of this essential maritime corridor. The implications of these developments are profound, as approximately 12 percent of the world's seaborne oil passes through this strait. Following the Houthis' aggressive posturing, oil prices surged dramatically, with Brent crude exceeding $100 per barrel, a stark increase from the $71 mark at the onset of the Iran conflict earlier this year.
Research historian James Bowden, in an exclusive interview with Times Now, highlighted that the primary threat lies not with the shipping vessels themselves but rather with Saudi ports along the Red Sea. He noted that while the Houthis have issued numerous warnings in the past, many did not lead to significant escalations. Bowden pointed out the presence of European naval forces in the region, which could deter direct assaults on commercial shipping. However, he cautioned that if hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis escalate further, it could provoke a U.S. military response. Bowden speculated that the U.S. might target Houthi positions in Yemen to assert its commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation in the region. The situation has already seen the Houthis attack two Saudi oil tankers, claiming these vessels violated a blockade near the Bab el-Mandeb. In retaliation, Saudi forces launched strikes on the port city of Hodeida, further escalating tensions and prompting warnings of potential threats to the Yanbu area, which houses a significant oil shipping port.
