ICC Dismisses Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Amid Misconduct Allegations

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has officially terminated the employment of its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, following a significant vote by member states in response to serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a former employee. The decision to remove Khan came after a secret ballot was conducted during a closed meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where a majority of the ICC’s member states expressed their disapproval of his conduct. Out of 125 member states, 82 voted in favor of his dismissal, citing 'serious misconduct and a serious breach of duty.' This vote reflects a growing concern among member nations regarding the integrity and ethical standards upheld within the court. In contrast, only 13 countries supported Khan's continued tenure, while 15 abstained from voting, and several members chose not to participate in the process at all.

Karim Khan, who is 56 years old, had been under suspension since last month as the ICC initiated a thorough investigation into the allegations brought forth by a former colleague. The investigation was prompted by claims made by a Malaysian lawyer, referred to as Sarah, who accused Khan of inappropriate behavior that escalated over time, culminating in an alleged physical assault. Sarah detailed her experiences in an interview with CNN, stating that the power dynamics at play made any notion of consent impossible. She emphasized that Khan's authority extended beyond her, affecting all employees under his supervision, which contributed to the troubling nature of the allegations against him. Khan's legal representation has indicated that they plan to contest the decision, asserting that they will pursue all available legal avenues to challenge the ruling.
