Trump Links Saudi Nuclear Deal to Abraham Accords Participation

On Friday, President Donald Trump made it clear that the United States would not proceed with a civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia unless the kingdom agrees to join the Abraham Accords, thereby normalizing its relations with Israel. During a press briefing in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that this condition was a fundamental understanding throughout the negotiation process. He dismissed any claims suggesting that this requirement was a recent addition following the announcement of advancements in the nuclear discussions. Trump stated, "No, nobody got out ahead. I mean, I just say that in order to do it, they have to be a member of the Abraham Accords, which have been very successful. But it’s time now that they do it."

The President further underscored that if Saudi Arabia does not align itself with the Abraham Accords, he would not endorse the nuclear deal. He reiterated that the kingdom was fully aware of this stipulation, saying, "If Saudi Arabia doesn’t join the Abraham Accords, I am not going to do the deal. This was always understood. Saudi Arabia knew." Trump also pointed out that any agreement would require Congressional approval and would not be finalized without Saudi Arabia's participation in the US-led initiative to normalize relations with Israel. He referred to US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who recently signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, indicating that both parties were cognizant of the conditions attached to the deal.
