Government Acts Against AI Deepfake Video of Minister Piyush Goyal

In a significant move, the Indian government has taken steps to address the emergence of an AI-generated deepfake video involving Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. This action follows Goyal's claims that his comments made outside Parliament were manipulated to misrepresent his stance and mislead the public. Reports indicate that multiple social media links hosting this altered video have been removed as part of the government's efforts to combat misinformation. The deepfake surfaced during a time of heightened tensions due to nationwide protests concerning the NEET examination, where the video falsely depicted Goyal making aggressive statements towards students involved in the demonstrations.

In a post shared on X, Goyal expressed his outrage over the misuse of artificial intelligence for deceptive purposes, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. He confirmed that he has filed a police complaint regarding the incident, stating that the altered video was designed to misinform the public. Goyal specified that he had lodged a formal complaint with the police, which resulted in the registration of an FIR (First Information Report) at the Chanakyapuri Police Station. He warned that strict legal measures would be pursued against anyone found responsible for creating, sharing, or promoting the misleading video. Goyal also encouraged the public to seek information only from credible sources, reinforcing his belief that the informed and tech-savvy youth of India would not succumb to such misinformation tactics.

The issue gained further attention when the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit revealed that accounts linked to Pakistani propaganda were disseminating the deepfake video, which inaccurately portrayed Goyal as threatening students engaged in protests. The manipulated footage emerged amid demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where protesters voiced their concerns over alleged irregularities in the NEET and other competitive exams, calling for comprehensive reforms in the educational system. Authorities have consistently warned social media users to be cautious of unverified content related to the protests, as misleading and altered information continues to proliferate online, potentially causing confusion and unrest among the public.
