Delhi's RAF Bans Use of Certain Weapons After Protest Review

The Rapid Action Force (RAF) has taken significant steps to address operational shortcomings identified during the protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20. Following a thorough review, the RAF has prohibited the use of Projectile Attack Guns (PAG), Anti-Riot Guns (ARG), Electric Shock Weapons, and Electric Shields in the ongoing deployment in the capital until further notice. This decision was made during a video conference led by Inspector General Seema Dhundia on July 22, where senior officers assessed the RAF's performance and acknowledged various deficiencies in their crowd-control operations. The review resulted in the establishment of 26 corrective measures aimed at enhancing operational discipline and accountability among the personnel involved.

The meeting highlighted the necessity for mandatory use of Body Worn Cameras during all operations, along with a directive for dedicated photography and videography of significant incidents. The review also scrutinized footage that allegedly depicted RAF personnel using excessive force against individuals who were already distancing themselves from the crowd, as well as instances of pushing individuals to the ground and striking those beyond barricades. While the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Directorate acknowledged the RAF's overall deployment effectiveness, the internal review revealed critical deficiencies that required immediate attention. Approximately 30 RAF officers participated in this crucial meeting, which aimed to rectify the issues identified during the protest.
