India Denies Russia's Claims on Ship Strike, Confirms Grain Cargo

On Friday, India firmly dismissed Russia's assertions regarding the MV Golden Leo, a ship that was reportedly struck off the coast of Ukraine, claiming it was transporting military supplies. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that the vessel, which tragically resulted in the deaths of four Indian nationals, was actually carrying grain. The ship had departed from the Odesa port in Ukraine, where it loaded its cargo before leaving on July 19. This clarification comes amidst rising tensions and differing narratives surrounding the ongoing conflict in the region.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided insights into the situation, stating that the information regarding the ship's cargo was sourced from the Directorate General of Maritime Administration of India. Jaiswal emphasized the importance of accurate information in such critical matters, reiterating that the MV Golden Leo was indeed a commercial vessel engaged in legitimate trade. He expressed deep condolences for the loss of the Indian nationals and highlighted the necessity for commercial shipping operations to remain unharmed during conflicts. Jaishankar had previously communicated this position during discussions at the ASEAN Regional Forum and in bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Manila.
