Supreme Court Urges NTA for NEET Exam Reforms by August 3 Deadline

In a significant development regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the Supreme Court of India has emphasized the urgent need for reforms in the examination process to prevent further lapses. During a hearing focused on the recent NEET paper leak incident, the court expressed its dissatisfaction with the current examination system, which has been plagued by repeated errors. The bench, consisting of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, underscored the necessity of moving away from this cycle of mistakes, stating, "We need to get out of the cycle of committing errors." The court has mandated that both the Central Government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) submit comprehensive affidavits detailing proposed reforms aimed at enhancing the security and integrity of the examination process.

The Supreme Court's directive comes in light of ongoing concerns regarding the management of the NEET examination, particularly in relation to the recommendations put forth by the Radhakrishnan Committee. During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court of recent developments and requested additional time to present these updates formally. Justice Narasimha highlighted the importance of the Centre's response to the committee's suggestions, which include the establishment of a governing board for the NTA, the involvement of domain experts, and improvements in the pre-examination procedures. One of the critical issues raised was the transportation of question papers, with the court noting that while the use of the Indian Air Force for this purpose was a temporary solution, a more permanent and institutionalized mechanism is necessary to ensure the secure handling of examination materials.
