The Indian stock markets, represented by the Nifty and Sensex indices, experienced a downturn today, closing nearly 0.5% lower, contributing to a significant weekly decline of over 2.5%. This downward trend has been attributed to increasing tensions in the US-Iran conflict and a notable rise in crude oil prices, which have collectively shaken investor confidence. Over the course of the week, the markets have faced five consecutive sessions of losses, resulting in a staggering loss of more than Rs 9 lakh crore in investor wealth. The Indian rupee remained relatively stable, closing at 96.56 against the dollar, slightly better than Thursday's rate of 96.57. Almost all sectoral indices felt the pressure, particularly those sensitive to oil price fluctuations. Major stocks that suffered losses included InterGlobe Aviation, Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, and Trent, highlighting the widespread impact of the current market conditions.
InterGlobe Aviation saw a decline of over 2% following the announcement of a Rs 238 crore net loss for the quarter ending in June, a significant factor contributing to investor unease. Similarly, Infosys experienced a drop of more than 1% after it adjusted its full-year revenue forecast, now projecting growth between 1.5% and 3% amid ongoing macroeconomic challenges. Conversely, some companies like HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and Sun Pharma managed to gain traction in the market, indicating a mixed response among different sectors. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, commented on the prevailing market conditions, stating that the ongoing uncertainty and volatility show no signs of abating. He pointed to the recent attacks on Saudi tankers by Iran-backed Houthis in the Red Sea as a primary driver behind the sharp increase in Brent Crude prices, which raises concerns for India's Balance of Payments.
